Arrowhead Elementary School has worked hard to raise money for the ALS Ride for Life. ALS is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, which is a neurological disease. People with ALS lose their ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Ride For Life was founded in 1997 by Christopher Pendergast, who was battling ALS. The first wheelchair ride took place a year later. Every year, ALS patients ride their power wheelchairs across Long Island to help raise funds for a cure. In past years, Arrowhead Elementary School has had the honor of having Chris Pendergast and Paul Weisman host assemblies about overcoming adversity and the challenges they faced living with ALS. The Ride for Life runs across Three Village each year, stopping at Arrowhead Elementary School, R.C. Murphy Junior High, and Ward Melville High School. Patients with ALS lead the journey through Three Village while students line up outside their schools and cheer positive messages. Last year, Arrowhead raised $1,185 through ice pop sales and donations. Let’s raise even more money than we did last year! With your support, we can raise awareness and continue fighting for a cure.

Let’s always remember the words of Chris Pendergast: “Never Give Up. Never Lose Hope. Always Remain Optimistic. Be Willing to Defy the Odds.”
